Captain Connolly moves on

May 14, 2024

There have been departures before and there will be more in the future but the end of term report for Aaron Connolly couldn’t be any more positive.

A major part of the Raiders team for the 6 years since he left championship winning Basingstoke Bison, Aaron has worn the C with pride, responsibility and whether he liked it or not basking in the respect from the fans, the management and players of all teams.

But time stands still for no man and with a family and greater claims for his time, the need to step into  less time consuming pastimes will always be a difficult call to ignore.

Raiders are grateful for his time and leadership and the considerable success on the scoreboard over those 6 years. We are also grateful to (now wife) Gemma for letting us borrow him for so long. I shall personally miss good humoured chats with Gemma, mum and dad and knowing the number 63 will drag us over another line.

Aaron was keen to make his words known to the team that adopted him so readily back in 2018.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure wearing the Gold and Blue over the last 6 years and I wish the club nothing but success in the future.

“I’d like to thank the management, Sean and Ben, all the backroom staff, the boys in the room, and of course the fans.”

Sean Easton explained that he is….

“Gutted to lose Aaron, he has been a great leader on and off the ice for us over the years.

“I fully appreciate his circumstances and that the National League now takes up a lot of time for everyone involved and rightly so his family comes first!

“I would like to thank Aaron personally and wish him all the best in his future endeavours”

Arguably you do not recruit a direct replacement for someone like Aaron and his influence will no doubt be shared amongst a number of players both returning and new.

But before moving on to team building we are sure all Raiders fans will want to join us in thanking Aaron for being the fantastic servant he has been to the Raiders. Whatever your future endeavours we wish you well and hope to see you in hockey venues in the not too distant future.
